Standing with Edward - Photographed August 2017, Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Navajo Nation, Arizona.

When I visited Canyon de Chelly, I hired a Navajo guide who took me into the canyon by jeep, and did an amazing job pointing out the art, history and natural features of the remarkable canyon. I was curious to know where American photographer Edward S Curtis created some of his images when he visited in 1904, and when I asked my guide Reggie, he smiled and drove me further into the canyon. As we reached a point where the canyon opened, I recognized the large rock feature on the North side of the canyon that provided the dramatic backdrop for the photo. Reggie told me that at the time of the photograph, white ranchers had been running cattle in the canyon and all of the natural vegetation had been cut down or trampled. As the landscape had changed, I decided against recreating the original image's framing.  I hiked up the opposite canyon slope to get a view over the green trees that have grown back in recent years, and found a similar view that featured the recovered trees and plants in the area Curtis photographed a group of Navajo on horseback.
